important thing is how the investigation is expanding. we went to bed, thinking the f.b.i. investigation ended and then we hear the f.b.i. was going back to broadwell's house, paula broadwell's house, petraeus' mistress in north carolina. we don't know what that is all about. then we hear shortly after that, that general john allen, the top u.s. commander in afghanistan, who was here in washington preparing for his confirmation hearings for his next job at the supreme allied commanderrer in europe, the confirmation hearings are on hold and he is now implicated in this controversy, because of 30,000 pages of e-mails to jill kelly, who is the woman who launched this investigation. so it really keeps unraveling. it's like an onion you keep rolling back. we also need to look at the contentious custody battle that jill kelly's sister was involved in. we now understand that petraeus and allen both wrote letters o, asking the judge to show leniency to kelly's sister. was there undue influence used by the two men for these wome women? and was there, were there any laws broken? it just keeps gett

been through all of the newspaper articles that the fbi has pretty much concluded there was no transfer of classified information from general petraeus to paula broadwell. i'm not convinced we know the full answers to that yet. why then did the fbi spend four hours at paula broadwell's home last night. point number two, how is it general pa contemporaneous and paula broadwell were able to share a private e-mail account where they saved e-mails in draft folders and the other person logged in to that same log in so they could read the same e-mails in the draft folder. it is a common technique used by other people in our own government as well as terrorists use that. it's a way to keep your e-mail off the public server that your company or g mail or yahoo or whoever it is could look at. the other thing that interested me was a nugget inside some of "the washington post" reporting today which is that petraeus told broadwell this summer to stop sending the harassing e-mails to kelly because kelly had told petraeus that she found out where she was getting those e-mails from. that was about th

that is dominating washington. the latest on the fbi investigation that led to the sudden resignation of cia director david petraeus on friday. lawmakers are now calling for an inquiry as new details emerge about the entire time line. officials say the investigation began after jill kelley, a 37-year-old volunteer at mcdill air force base in tampa, complained of receiving harassing e-mails. kelley and her husband met petraeus and his wife when he headed the tampa bay central command from 2008 to 2010. now the fbi traced those e-mails to paula broadwell, co-author of the tpetraeus biography that le them to other 0 e-mail that is did indicate a romantic relationship between broadwell and petraeus. this morning "the new york times" report says they were notified of petraeus' affair in the late summer. in the senior law enforcement official said they interviewed petraeus in late october and concluded there was no criminal violation. and on november 6, election day, the fbi informed the director of national intelligence, jim clapper. clapper then told the white house on wednesday. the national security te

about outstanding military leaders and overall questions about the fbi. >> the pentagon inspector general is now investigating now general john allen. top american commander in afghanistan. fbi has uncover between 20,000 and 30,000 documents. mostly e-mails sent between allen and this woman, jill kelley. a senior defense official tells msnbc that the e-mails were inappropriate. kelley was the target of paula broad we'll's e-mails. the associated press that broadwell thought of kelley as a romantic rival for petraeus affection. he was supposed to start the process this week to be the next commander of american forces in europe and supreme allied commander of nato, allen will remain commander in afghanistan. . >>> i don't even know where to begin. how does this happen? >> well, i don't know it happens. particularly in the digital age. the idea that people think that if you have thousands of e-mails that they're not going to be picked up and found out it's sort of amazing. what's most disturbing, this is a terrible time from a foreign policy standpoint to have petraeus out. scandals
of events. on november 2nd, the fbi concluded after the final interview given by paula broadwell that there was no basis for criminal charges. officials tell nbc news that national intelligence director james clapper was told about the investigation the following week, on election day. clapper informed the white house the next day. officials say it was not until thursday, november 8th, however, that president obama was first notified and met with petraeus, who then offered to resign. the president accepted that resignation on friday, the same day that leaders of the house and senate committees first learned of the affair. diane finestein joins me now. congressman, why did you and your colleague on the house side not know about this for all of these months? >> because a decision was made somewhere not to brief us, which is atypical. generally, what we call the four corners, the chair and rankings of both committees are briefed on operationally sensitive matters. this is certainly an operationally sensitive matter. but we weren't briefed. i don't know who made that decision. and i

, complained to the fbi that she was receiving harassing e-mails from an anonymous sender. she registered the complaint this past summer. the fbi investigated and in the process discovered the sender was paula broadwell. and that also broadwell had an affair with petraeus. the e-mails to kelley stemmed from broadwell's apparent jealousy of kelley's relationship with petraeus. there is no evidence that kelley had an affair with petraeus. the kelley family acknowledged that they were friendly with the petraeus family. by late october, under questioning from the fbi, both petraeus and broadwell had admitted to the affair. on november 6th, election day, the fbi notified the director of national intelligence, james clapper, of the affair. clapper advised petraeus to step down, and within days, petraeus did. question, is there more to this affair than meets the eye? pat buchanan. >> i don't think there's a great deal more than what we already know, john. a lot of people are attacking the fbi for investigating those harassing e-mails running to the source but once the fbi did and they found out,
